Principal’s Welcome

Hello from the New Headmaster – Mr Nigel Adams

Time is passing at a rapid rate and I have truly hit the deck at full force and am enjoying my position as the new Headmaster of Port Alfred School. I would like to take this opportunity to thank one and all for the warm welcome and to say that I look forward to meeting you, if I haven’t already done so.

I am a proud Eastern Caper who was born in Uitenhage and come from an academic background. My mother is a teacher as is my sister and my brother is a technical trainer.

I matriculated from Uitenhage High School in 1985 then completed a BA Arts degree at the University of the Western Cape having majored in psychology and languages. I then chose to study accounting and, on a part-time basis, I also studied for my Higher Diploma in Education (HDE) as well as a B Ed at Rhodes University. My studying didn’t stop there. I attained a sports management certificate at what is now the Nelson Mandela University and also studied school leadership and management through the University of Stellenbosch.

I met my wife, Juliana while at university and she is currently a Head of Department at John Bisseker Secondary School in East London.

My first appointment was at Alphendale Secondary School in East London where I spent 27 years, ending as the Head of Department for commerce. I then went on, as deputy Headmaster to Mr Nick Els (a proudly past Port Alfred High pupil) to Lilyfontein School which has a very strong focus on sport and the outdoors. This perfectly suited my sport-orientated background. I believe that children can’t be expected to sit all day behind a desk and that we need inclusive education where we are all aware of the challenges our children face. It’s important to provide children with the space where they can be themselves while also providing support as role-models to look up to. I have a particular interest in early childhood development programmes and in relationship-building and commitment to teamwork.
My vision for the school is to ensure that we regain our leadership position as one of the schools in the district with a 100% matric pass rate. I want to appeal to the parents and the community at large to work with me to unite the school and truly ensure that we are your family school at the sea.
