Why a teacher?

I have been asked this question more times than I can remember, and rightly so.

After I matriculated in Johannesburg, I spent three years in England before moving to Port Alfred to study and received my Bachelor of Commerce as well as my Bachelor of Business Administration. During my final year of studying I started working as a SCUBA diving instructor and quickly climbed the ranks to Instructor Trainer. This is where I discovered my love for teaching.

The love of studying was also awakened in me and I took multiple courses which has lead to me becoming an instructor in various fields, such as First Aid, Basic Firefighting, Oxygen Administration, Skippers Courses, Short Range Certificate examiner for Marine VHF Radios, etc. My love for teaching and the sea was combined further when I was appointed as the Training Officer for NSRI (National Sea Rescue Institute) Port Alfred.

The first step I took towards teaching children and young adults was when I obtained my TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate which allows me to teach English to students – primarily online. Shortly after, I found myself looking after a few classes at Port Alfred High School thanks to a friend’s recommendation and a teacher who had to go on a course. This same friend had told me a few years prior that she thinks I would make a great teacher. I laughed at the idea then as I did not think I had what it takes.

That first period of that first day was like putting on a glove that was made for your hand! I knew, after 45 minutes, that this is where I am called to be! I substituted a few more times and during this time God really made His plan clear to me, that this is where He wanted me to be. It was of course a big decision and my husband and I as well as our Life group prayed about this topic earnestly and God just opened doors for me.

I was given the honour of teaching Mathematics to one Grade 8 class and Mathematical Literacy to a Grade 10 and 11 class. These kids very quickly took their place in my heart and no other job before this has ever felt so right. As of this year I teach Mathematics to a Grade 7 and 8 class as well as Mathematical Literacy to a Grade 10, 11 and 12 class – and I love it (and them) dearly! Like I have said to my husband and family, even the tough days at school, are better than the good days elsewhere.

So, here I am, about to study towards another teaching qualification and loving life! And as for the question, why a teacher? The answer is simple – it’s where God wants me, and He definitely does know best!
