Much has changed in education in South Africa since 1994 yet Port Alfred School remains a leading school in our community. The modern reality is that the Department of Education pays 50% of the teachers’ salary bill and provides less than R250 per child per year for operating expenses. School fees are therefore essential for the school to thrive as a centre of educational excellence.
Should Port Alfred School end the 2020 financial year with less than a prescribed surplus, the Department of Education could declare the school insolvent and take over management from the current Governing Body. This means that half of the staff will immediately lose their jobs and classes will double in size. As you can appreciate, the Governors are working hard to prevent such a scenario from occurring and your support in this regard would be greatly appreciated.
